Caregivers
Deciding between their own regulation and a dependent's immediate need.
Core Framework
A structural framework for prioritizing health, care, and decision-making
A decision framework for figuring out what needs you first — not by what matters most, but by what's closest to breaking.
Care radiates outward from capacity.
Capacity is protected inward.
Worth is equal across layers.
Urgency is not.
In real life, care decisions rarely arrive one at a time. A person may be trying to protect their health, care for dependents, respond to relationships, meet work or community obligations, and survive systems that shape all of those things at once.
The Life-Centered Bowl of Well‑Being offers a way to organize those decisions without pretending some lives matter less. It does not ask what is most worthy. It asks what reaches well‑being fastest if left unsupported.
The framework gives a working test for a question that comes up constantly, in very different rooms:
Deciding between their own regulation and a dependent's immediate need.
Helping clients tell self-care apart from self-abandonment.
Distinguishing true dependents from a wider circle of care, before burnout forces the distinction.
Recognizing when a student's life outside class is legitimately load-bearing, not underperformance.
Evaluating whether a "minor" change is actually an immediate crisis for the people it affects.
A need belongs closer to well‑being when leaving it unmet would compromise the capacity to function, remain regulated, or safely show up for the layers around it — right now.
If it protects capacity later, it belongs to a future layer. If it matters but does not immediately compromise capacity, it may still matter deeply while belonging further outward.
